High performing, sustainable and efficiently interconnected trans-European networks for Transport are key to ensure Europe’s prosperity.
FENIX, a 3-year project funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funding instrument for Transport, supports the ‘digitalisation’ of the European transport industry by undertaking the development, validation and deployment of digital information systems along the EU Transport Core Network, in particular along multi-modal transport corridors.
FENIX establishes the premier European federative network of platforms for logistics planning and execution as a Service, serving the European logistics community of shippers, logistics service providers, mobility infrastructure providers, cities, and authorities.
The project’s vision is to empower these actors, including both public authorities and business stakeholders, to perform collaborative planning and execution monitoring in various corridor scenarios and contexts. To deliver this vision, FENIX leverages interoperable, interchangeable planning and optimisation tools and services utilising shared, enhanced, secure and reliable data and information resources. FENIX therefore leverages compelling enablers such as Internet of Things, Big Data, Data Integration, Data Analytics, Data Products, Intelligent Transportation Systems and new satellite navigation technologies.
In particular, FENIX revolves around the following specific objectives:
- To deliver a federated network of transport and logistics actors across Europe, enabling sharing of information and services needed to optimise TEN-T corridors from economic, environmental and social perspectives;
- To provide secretariat support for the European Commission Digital Transport Logistics Forum (DTLF);
- To undertake liaison activities with other European Commission’s initiatives and to deliver an EU Corridor community building programme;
- To demonstrate the operational feasibility and benefits of the FENIX federative network of platforms in nine TEN-T European Corridors and four Motorways of the Sea.
Key outcomes of the FENIX project include:
- 10% higher load factors on all corridors resulting in enhanced efficiency and competitivity;
- Combination of best transport modes, with freight routed via CO2 reducing transportation, with a potential reduction of emissions by 15%;
- Improved reliability on synchromodality by minimum 10%;
- Improved logistics efficiencies through a paperless environment (with a reduction of paper document exchange by 70%).
FENIX is coordinated by ERTICO-ITS Europe and brings together 43 partners from 11 EU and associated countries: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland.
In FENIX, eBOS will leverage its extensive experience in ICT to deliver on the vision of a ‘digital’ European transport industry.
eBOS will be mainly involved in the integration of the FENIX technological blocks. In particular, eBOS will contribute to designing and building the federated architecture of data sharing platforms for Transport & Logistics.
eBOS will also participate to the integration of additional services and applications to the FENIX federative network of platforms and undertake extensive activities related to the testing and verification of the technology building blocks to ensure their readiness before their deployment on the Pilot Sites.
